What to Expect?

As part of the of the medical evaluation, a drug test is often required. The drug test for the USCG can only be performed by a Certified Medical Review Officer at an approved facility using Federal Chain of Custody Forms and a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration approved laboratory.
How Long to Receive the Results?
The completed forms for the physical are generally available the same day where there are no complications. The results of the drug test are generally available in 2 business days after 3pm where there are no unforeseen delays.
Top 10 Medical Conditions That Can Cause A Delay Or Denial Of An Application For A Merchant Mariner Credential Or Medical Certificate Credential
If you have one or more of the following medical conditions, you will be required to provide supporting medical documentation from your treating physician outlined below. Diabetes: Hemoglobin A1C results within 6 months. If you do not have the test or your results are over 6 months old, BMUC can provide the test.
Psychiatric Disorders: Clearance letter from your treating physician within 12 months.
Sleep Disorders: Clearance letter from your treating physician within 12 months.
Impaired Hearing: Clearance letter from your treating physician within 12 months.
Seizures: Clearance letter from your treating physician within 12 months.
Vision Requirements: May require a letter from an ophthalmologist.
Pulmonary Conditions: Clearance letter from your treating physician within 12 months.
The following conditions require waivers that must be obtained by the Coast Guard prior to obtaining your physical.
