MEET THE DOCTOR

Martin M. Roche, Sr., M.D., is a native of New York City and did his undergraduate studies for his Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia University in New York City and received his M.D. degree from National University of Ireland, Cork Ireland. He interned at Gorgas Hospital in the Panama Canal Zone and completed his residency in Surgery and Ophthalmology at Tufts and Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Roche is Board Certified by the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Board of Ophthalmology, American Association of Medical Review Officers (AAMRO) and The Medical Council of Ireland. He is presently on Staff at Holy Cross Hospital, North Ridge Medical Center and Oakridge Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Entering the Navy in 1967 through 1969, he served with the rank of Lieutenant Commander during the Viet Nam War. He specialized in Occupational Safety and Health in the workplace, and was involved extensively with the Federal Bureau of Occupational Safety and Industrial Health Field of Cincinnati, Ohio in the research of asbestosis berylliosis and other toxic substances found in the work place.

 
 
Dr. Roche balanced being in the practice of Ophthalmology in the Fort Lauderdale area since 1972 while also serving as the Chief of Emergency Medicine for the second largest emergency room in the state of Massachusetts from 1969-1989. As an emergency room physician he preserved life, prevented disability, relieved suffering and served as the patient advocate, providing treatment that was in the patient’s best interest. His strong medical leadership has been appreciated by the Fort Lauderdale community through the establishment in July 2000, of the Broward Medical & Urgent Care Center.

Dr. Roche strives to provide the best patient care possible, by being extremely active in ongoing education on diversified medical information. He has numerous certificates and special training in Osteoporosis, Arthritis Therapy & Pain Management, HIV/AIDS & Pulmonary Complications and Echocardiography from the Cardiac & Vascular Institute.

In the field of ophthalmology Dr. Roche specializes in no-stitch cataract/implant surgery as well as the treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Roche has extensive operative experience in surgery of the retina by laser and microsurgery. In addition, he has vast experience in the medical therapy of multiple retinal medical problems including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Dr. Roche also has extensive surgical experience in the techniques for the correction of refractive eye problems. He has been a forerunner in the use of LASIK Refractive Surgery. Dr. Roche has taught and has been involved in multiple courses taken by ophthalmologists throughout the world for the surgical correction of eye disease. Dr. Roche has done many missionary eye surgeries in Panama and the Philippines with the charitable Organization Seeing Eye Expeditions. He is a member of multiple ophthalmic societies including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology, Florida Ophthalmological Society, and Broward County Ophthalmological Society.

Dr. Roche has four children, Martin Roche, Jr., M.D., who is an Orthopedic Surgeon at Holy Cross Hospital, and daughters Ashling and Yvonne who are lawyers, and a beloved son Patrick Roche, M.D., who passed in his 25th year, 1989. He also has a grandson Devin and a granddaughter Kyla.

Pediatric eye

Martin M. Roche, Sr., M.D. has been in the practice of Ophthalmology in the Fort Lauderdale area since 1972. Dr. Roche has background experience in implant surgery for cataracts, glaucoma surgery, retinal surgery and extensive experience with Pediatric eye problems.

For the past few years, Dr. Roche has been very active in LASIK surgery of the cornea for refractive correction of eye problems. Dr. Roche has taught and has been involved in multiple courses taken by ophthalmologists throughout the world for the surgical correction of eye disease.
